“How reliably aid is given can be more important than how much.”

June 25th, 2009

Common sense and research keep confirming the notion that a consistent stream of support however humble is more effective than dollops of cash.

Teacher Training in Sub-Saharan Africa Initiative

June 24th, 2009

UNESCO Teacher Training Initiative. There is very little activity out there around improving the qualitative
side of children´s education in West Africa. Unesco started a small
project in 2008, but there are no updates since then.

I´ve attached the brochure.  Notice, how difficult it is
for them to measure and find language to discuss “Quality Assurance.”

Dr. Sue Wortham has toiled to address this issue for WCR over the years.
We have picked a difficult mission at WCR.  NGO´s are always under pressure

to produce tangible statistics which is challenging but this is one more reason it is such important work.

On “Grassroots” Development

June 23rd, 2009

Grassroots movements of any form are derived from the local community (bottom-up) versus the government or a large organization (top-down). An increasing number of development professionals agree that in the context of rural West Africa this is a sustainable approach, especially when the effort is organized and managed by local talent.

The World Economic Forum on Africa just met, Education on the Agenda

June 23rd, 2009

Salim Vally, senior researcher at the University of the Witwatersrand’s Education Policy Unit, says the education and health systems are in dire need of a bailout from the continents’ governments.

“Bailing out private business is rewarding precisely those who are putting us in the present predicament. Early childhood development and good quality public education are essential for society to make any kind of development, and that is where any resources should be put,” he says.

On Defining “Aid”

June 19th, 2009

I find Wikipedia’s definitions of Aid, types and terminology, clear and helpful. Take note of the section on “criticisms of aid.” The International Aid Transparency Initiative would be a step in the right direction. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_aid

April and May Activity REPORT

Owing the new situation, I was obliged to collect as much reassuring information as possible to give to the school directors, teachers and the whole community. At that very moment I would call or meet them very often to make them easy in their mind. When things became clearer to me (when I visited the new website) we about the new orientations or vision of WCR, if I may say so. In our discussions almost all understand the new situation without any difficulties. However some considered the manifold changes as a weak point of WCR. As strong points, many people put the emphasize on the fact that thanks to WCR, younger children have the chance to go to school and be awaken like their fellow kids in the big cities. All in all people do appreciate the idea of expending wcr’s network of school so that any teacher can take the most of it.

The pedagogical aspect of our activities had to do with the evaluation of the trainings’ implementation. There the pedagogical Team (CP and the trainers) is getting ready to visit ECD teachers, Khady SOW in Diatmoury; Fatou KEBE in Felane and her new collaborator hired recently.

As to the partner’s Day I mentioned in my last repport, it was finally scheduled May the 28th 2009. It was an opportunity for us to make more people know about our actions as an educational partner. I used the content of our website to plan my speech. Then I talked about;

1-Our story,

2-Where we intervene,

3-Our sustainable approach,

4-The rational behind teacher training in Africa,

5-The balance sheet our actions in Senegal,

6-Appreciation of our collaboration with the officials in Fatick.

Benjamin Lodmell on Why a Blog?

June 19th, 2009

A blog, or a weblog, is a mechanism to evolve a conversation, like what is the most effective way to assist the poorest countries on earth. It is also literally a log, a record, of that discussion. I find a blog a good way to upload detailed content like activity reports and detailed commentary that might not be appropriate to place on the website. Our hope is that this blog will encourage a meaningful discussion about development as well as create more transparency around the work of world chidlren’s relief. Stay involved!
