In
the South American country of Bolivia, there are small,
rural dental clinics developed to provide dental care
to thousands of residents.
While these clinics have highly skilled volunteer dentists,
they lack dental equipment and supplies.
|
Dr.
Michale Abernathy
helps a clinic in Bolivia.
|
For example, one clinic recently visited by WCR had a
full staff of volunteers, yet lacked the basic necessities
such as novocaine and burrs.
In contrast, much of the equipment no longer used and
certain supplies thrown away at American dental offices
are still largely functional. These would be precious
commodities in Bolivia, one of the poorest countries in
South America. |
World Children's Relief is partnering with the non-profit
organization Esperança
in developing an Adopt-a-Clinic program, which links American
dental offices with Bolivian clinics. |
|
American offices commit to sending equipment and supplies
3-4 times a year to their Bolivian counterparts. In addition,
a cultural exchange of letters and photos between dentists
and especially their patients further links the two offices.
