Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, suffering from political and economic instability.

Huge inequality exists between the private education available to the rich and the public education for the poor.

The primary school in Cayes is located in the southwestern region of the country.

The school currently provides education for the underserved children in the community. Since school fees are so low, and many of the students can’t pay them, the school is very limited in the quality programs it can offer.

World Children’s Relief is closely partnering with IAAC (International Alliance for the Advancement of Children) – to raise the standards of the education provided for the children at this primary school in Cayes. Ghislaine Georges is the Executive Director of IAAC and also the country representative for WCR in Haiti.

Progress has been made on the implementation of the four fundamental programs. Dr. Sue Wortham, expert in Early Childhood Development, has begun extensive volunteer work on developing an ECD curriculum for the school. After her visit in October 2003, she began drafting a five-session training course for the preschool and primary school teachers.

Before becoming a Sullivan School, the primary school in Cayes did not have a preschool class, since the national curriculum begins with the first grade. A preschool class was formed and a teacher hired for the 2003-2004 school year. Sue Wortham will be traveling to Haiti in April 2004 to carry out the teacher training sessions for the teachers at the Sullivan School in Cayes, and also for teachers from surrounding schools.

Since Haiti is the planned destination for WCR’s volunteer trips, most of which involve doctors, Ghislaine Georges has also started developing a clinic that would be able to welcome dentists, chiropractors and perhaps other medical professionals.
