Each World Children's Relief school will Initially, will focus on four fundamental programs:

Early Childhood Development
Teacher Training
Health Education
Sports

Given that critical development for a child occurs from a very young age, the Sullivan Schools emphasis pre-school, kindergarten and early elementary classes.

This is in the form of curriculum development for those classes, if they don’t already exist from the Ministry of Education. If such a curriculum does exist, emphasis is focused on its proper implementation among the younger children at the school, and providing the necessary resources.

Early Childhood Development expert, Dr. Sue C. Wortham, is working with WCR to develop and implement such programs.

Instead of attempting to implement structural change in a country’s already established educational system, WCR believes it is easier to train teachers to more effectively teach their students.

Sue Wortham is also working on teacher training programs, initially developed for ECD teachers, but open to any interested teacher. Available programs and resources already established within each country are integrated into the schools.

Since proper health education can be the best “preventative medicine” against many curable and preventable diseases, the Sullivan Schools attempt to set aside class time to address health issues.

Human resources from the community, such as local NGOs and community health professionals, are chosen to lead the health education programs established at the school. UNICEF’s book “Facts for Life” can be used as an excellent guide to key health issues in the developing world.

Posters on health topics are placed in the classrooms, and teachers are trained to better facilitate health education activities at the schools.

Given the difficult circumstances of many rural primary schools, sports education is often overlooked.

However, the physical development of young children is fundamental, not only for their physical health, but also for their mental well-being. Sullivan Schools are provided with a sports field and sports equipment to encourage the formation of sports teams and activities, including sports classes for all grade levels.

Local volunteers are largely depended upon to initiate and maintain these sports programs.
