The
village of Jisonayili is on the outskirts of Tamale, the
capital city of the Northern Region. While it benefits
from the proximity to the city with its economic life
and government departments, it also suffers from the pressure
of a growing population for land.

The primary school in Jisonayili is a government school,
which means no fees are charged for student enrollment.
This naturally attracts children from poorer families.
Given the low-income of the students’ families,
schools cannot expect to raise money for school development
from the parents. Unfortunately, the money from the Ghanaian
government is also less than adequate. |
World Children’s Relief is working with CAMFED
to improve the education these children receive at Jisonayili
Primary School. CAMFED also works closely with a local
NGO, called RAINS, based in the northern region of Ghana.

Part of this improvement includes the four programs characteristic
of the Sullivan Schools. It also includes an extensive
girls’ scholarship program that gives poor girls
the opportunity to enroll in school. |
