The children of Sierra Leone have a special need. Emerging from a brutal civil war, the United Nations Human Development Index has ranked Sierra Leone as the poorest country in the world.

The village of Makari in the depressed north-cental region of the country is just south of the city of Makeni, a former rebel stronghold.

The 6-room schoolhouse, once the pride of the village, was made unsuitable for school, after being used as an army checkpoint.

Students at Makari

Many of the 200 children enrolled in school have just returned after being internally displaced during the decade-long war. Several children were child soldiers and now face a daunting task of reintegrating into the community.

In partnership with IFESH, WCR has repaired the school to make it suitable for classes. In addition, three latrines have been constructed, one for the teachers, another for the female students and a third for the male students. A well is also being built on the school property to provide clean water for the school and its surrounding community.

The four fundamental programs of the Sullivan School network are beginning to be implemented (ECD, Health Education, Sports and Teacher Training) to ensure a quality education for the children of Makari.
